Bad news for Love/Hate fans: John Connors says the show is 'over for good'

It was rumoured that a sixth season, a spin-off based on Connors’ character Patrick, was in development.

IT’S BEEN TWO years since the nation sat down to watch King Nidge meet his fate on the final episode of Love/Hate, and since then, the show’s own fate has hung in the balance.

After the fifth series finished up in 2014, RTÉ released a statement saying a sixth series was in development, but it wouldn’t be coming to us any time soon:

It’s just a week since the series finale aired and RTÉ, the producers and Stuart [Carolan, the series creator] feel it’s important to take time and reflect before going to production with a sixth season.

The following year, it was rumoured that this sixth season was in fact a spin-off based on bomb maker Patrick and his family – however, RTÉ said there were “no plans” to bring it back at that time.

So which of these contradictory statements was correct? Unfortunately it is the latter, according to actor John Connors, who played Patrick on the show.

In an interview with The Irish Mirror, Connors said Love/Hate was over and done with:

It’s gone. It finished and that is it – it is never coming back. It is over for good.

No need to worry about Connors, though – he’s got a documentary on racism in America on RTÉ tonight, and two more drama roles under his belt.

Ah well. Wasn’t it great (and mildly traumatising) while it lasted? Nidgey, Patrick and co, we’ll miss you.
